Employment Leave Legislation Update

You may have heard or seen information on the ‘Employment Leave Act 2026’ which was passed into Law in August of this year. This new act will be a significant change in the way in which leave works in New Zealand.

As changes do not take effective until August 2028 there is plenty of time to get organised, however it may pay to:

  • Look over the “Key Changes” as issued by MBIE
  • Locate your Employment Agreements and understand what requires updating
  • Check in with your Payroll Software team in regards to development and request to be kept up to date with training (if required)

Remember the changes do not come into effect until August 2028, therefore it is status quo regarding how leave is handled and the current legislation remains.

Employment.govt.nz have published a Guidance Timeline which informs on when information will be released, click here to review.
