DairyBase is a free DairyNZ analysis tool to help you better understand your farm, to feed into informed decision making by comparing KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) against industry averages. We support our dairy farmers who want to be part of this initiative, by uploading your annual financial data and working through any follow-up questions with the DairyBase team. There is a small charge for our time to do this. Please let your Director or Client Manager know if you want your farm to be analysed.
Updates from the DairyBase Team
- Changes in reporting (from 2024/25 season):
- Fonterra dividends: Now classified as off-farm revenue (not milk income), since shareholding is no longer directly tied to milk production. This should make $/KgMS figures more closely match the actual farm gate milk price
- Wearable technology: Now reported under its own line, “Wearables,” as an operating expense (rather than being grouped under subscriptions)
- Other livestock: With fewer bobby calves and more beef/other stock transactions, these will generally remain within dairy farm transactions unless significant, or on request. Please let your accountant know if you want your beefie income reported separately as they will need to ensure these transactions are split out
- Other developments:
- Data integration projects: Work is underway with finance, fertiliser, dairy companies and others to allow direct data feeds into DairyBase. This should speed up end-of-year reporting and reduce farm data requests. Draft reports will use cashbook data, later replaced by audited accounts.
- System rebuild: Over the next 12 months, DairyBase will be rebuilt after 20 years in its current form. The new version will focus on easier use, improved presentation, mobile/app access, and the potential for in-season data imports.
